How to Tell if Clothes Are Polyester (Without the Label)
How to tell if clothes are polyester: check the label first, then use your hands and a drop of water. Polyester usually feels smooth and slightly slick, has a light sheen, makes water bead up instead of soaking in, builds static, and springs back from wrinkles. Cotton feels drier and softer, soaks up water fast, and creases easily.

Check the label first
The easiest test is reading. In the US, UK and Canada, most clothing is required to list fiber content on a label.
Where to look:
- Side seam inside, low on the left, is the most common spot.
- Neck label or a printed tag on the inside back.
- Bottom hem on some activewear.
Reading the fabric content label:
- "100% polyester" is polyester.
- "65% polyester / 35% cotton" or "50/50" is polycotton (also called poly-cotton or a blend).
- "Elastane," "spandex" or "Lycra" means stretch, often mixed with polyester.
- "Nylon," "acrylic" and "polyamide" are also synthetic.
Label cut off, faded, or you're in a charity shop with no time? Use the tests below.
The feel test
What does polyester clothing feel like? Close your eyes and rub the fabric between your fingers.
Polyester shirt feel
- Smooth, slightly slippery or "plasticky."
- Can feel cool at first, then warm against skin.
- Springy: it bounces back when you scrunch it.
- Very even and uniform, no little bumps.
Cotton feel
- Soft, matte and a bit "dry."
- Slightly textured, sometimes with tiny slubs.
- Feels like it would absorb sweat.
- Gets softer with every wash.
How to tell if clothes are polyester or cotton by feel alone isn't perfect, because brushed polyester and peached finishes can feel very soft. Combine it with the next tests.
Sheen and look
Hold the fabric up near a window.
- Polyester often has a subtle shine or sparkle in the light, even in "matte" fabrics.
- Cotton looks flat and matte.
- Polyester prints are often super bright and crisp (sublimation printing works on polyester).
- Pilling: polyester pills are tight little balls that don't fall off. Cotton pills tend to shed.
The water drop test
This is the best at-home test and it's completely safe.
- Put a few drops of water on an inside seam or hem.
- Watch for 10 to 20 seconds.
- Cotton: the water soaks in fast and spreads, leaving a dark spot.
- Polyester: the water beads or sits on top longer, then slowly spreads.
- Polycotton: somewhere in between.
Note: some cotton is treated with water repellent, and some polyester activewear is designed to wick. So use this with the other tests. You might see a "burn test" online for fabric identification. Skip it: it's a fire risk, and the other checks get you close enough.
Wrinkle and static clues
Wrinkle test fabric
- Scrunch a corner tightly in your fist for 10 seconds.
- Let go.
- Polyester: springs back, barely wrinkled.
- Cotton and linen: stays creased.
Static test fabric
Rub the fabric quickly on your hair or a wool sweater in a dry room, then hold it near your arm or a tissue.
- Polyester and other synthetics: cling and crackle.
- Cotton: very little static.
How do I know if my clothes are synthetic? If they wrinkle-resist, cling with static and bead water, that's three strong signs.
Here's the thing: one test on one shirt is easy. Figuring out why you never wear half your tops is harder, because you don't notice the pattern day to day. WORN keeps a one-photo-a-day private diary, and after a month it shows the pieces you really wear and the ones you never touch. Start my outfit diary
Cotton vs polyester vs polycotton
| Cotton | Polyester | Polycotton | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, matte, dry | Smooth, slick, springy | Soft, slightly smooth |
| Water | Soaks in fast | Beads, slow | Medium |
| Wrinkles | Easily | Barely | Some |
| Shrinking | Can shrink | Very little | Little |
| Static | Low | High | Medium |
| Dries | Slowly | Fast | Medium |
Polycotton meaning: a blend of polyester and cotton. How to tell if fabric is cotton or polycotton? Polycotton wrinkles less, dries faster and has a tiny bit more sheen than pure cotton.
How to tell if clothes are cotton fast: matte look, fast water absorption, holds creases.
Does it matter? Comfort, smell and care
Polyester vs cotton isn't "good vs bad." Each has a job.
Is polyester breathable?
Regular polyester is less breathable than cotton for many people, which is why some poly tees feel sweaty in summer. Activewear polyester is often knit to wick sweat away, which can feel great at the gym.
Why does polyester smell?
Many people find polyester holds onto body odor more than cotton, even after washing. Washing activewear soon after wearing, and not letting it sit damp, helps.
Care
- Polyester barely shrinks, dries fast and resists wrinkles.
- Cotton can shrink with heat. More here: how do I know if a shirt will shrink.
- Bright polyester prints rarely fade, while dyed cotton can bleed. See how to tell if clothes are colorfast.
Thrift store fabric check
At a thrift store, charity shop or a Depop seller's pics, use: label, sheen, scrunch test. If you can, ask the seller for a photo of the fabric content label.
Find out which fabrics you actually reach for
How to tell if clothes are polyester is a two-minute job. Knowing which fabrics you actually like wearing takes a little history. WORN is a waitlist for a private outfit diary: one photo a day, one tap, no cataloguing. After a month it reads back the pieces you really wear and suggests tomorrow's outfit from your own clothes.
FAQ
How can I tell if a shirt is polyester without the label?
Do the water drop, scrunch and static tests. If water beads, wrinkles bounce out and it clings with static, it's likely polyester or a polyester blend.
What does polyester feel like compared to cotton?
Polyester feels smoother and slightly slippery, with a bit of spring. Cotton feels softer, more matte and drier to the touch.
Is polyester bad to wear?
Not bad, just different. It dries fast and keeps its shape, but many people find it warmer and more likely to hold odor than cotton.
How do I know if fabric is 100% cotton?
It looks matte, soaks up water fast, wrinkles easily and has little static. The label is the only way to be completely sure.
Can you tell polyester from a photo online?
Sometimes, by shine and very crisp prints, but it's unreliable. Ask the seller for a picture of the fabric content label before you buy.
