How Do I Know if a Shirt Will Shrink? Read These Clues

5 min read · WORN

How do I know if a shirt will shrink? Look at two things: the fabric on the label and whether it says "preshrunk." 100% cotton, wool, linen and rayon are the most likely to shrink, especially in hot water or a hot dryer, while polyester and other synthetics barely shrink at all. Wash cold and air dry, and most shirts stay the size you bought.

If your favorite tee shrank once and you never wore it again, WORN would show you which shirts you actually still wear and which ones quietly dropped out. Start my outfit diary

The quick answer: fabric and label

Do this check before the first wash. It takes 20 seconds.

  1. Find the care label (usually on the side seam inside, or the neck).
  2. Read the fiber content. High natural fiber = higher shrink risk.
  3. Look for "preshrunk." Lowers the risk, doesn't erase it.
  4. Check the care symbols. "Do not tumble dry" is a big hint.
  5. Think about the knit or weave. Loose, stretchy knits shrink more than tight weaves.

How to know if clothes will shrink comes down to those five clues every time.

Fabrics that shrink most

Fabric Shrink risk Notes
Wool High Heat plus agitation can felt it. Hand wash or wool cycle
Rayon / viscose High Can shrink a lot in warm water
100% cotton (not preshrunk) Medium to high Most shrinking happens in early washes
Linen Medium Mostly in the first wash
Cotton-polyester blend Low to medium The polyester holds it steady
Polyester, nylon, acrylic Low Very stable, but high heat can damage them

Does cotton shrink?

Yes, especially in hot water and the dryer. Will 100 cotton shrink? Often a bit, unless it's been preshrunk. Heavyweight cotton tees tend to shrink less in width but can still lose length.

Does polyester shrink?

Barely. It's one reason blends are popular for basics and hoodies. If you're not sure what your shirt is made of, here's how to tell if clothes are polyester.

Does a hoodie shrink?

A cotton-heavy hoodie can lose a little length and sleeve. A cotton-poly fleece usually stays close to its size.

What "preshrunk" really means

Preshrunk meaning: the fabric (or sometimes the finished shirt) was washed, steamed or treated before sale so most of the shrinking already happened at the factory.

Preshrunk cotton meaning in real life:

If a shirt fits perfectly in the store and it's not preshrunk cotton, treat it gently or buy with a little room. Not sure how it should fit in the first place? Run the checks in how do I know if a shirt fits me.

Care label symbols to look for

You don't need to memorize the whole chart. These five tell you how to tell if a shirt will shrink in the wash or dryer.

UK and Canadian labels use the same international symbols, often with temperatures in Celsius. US labels may also have words.

The first-wash test

How do you know if a shirt is going to shrink for sure? You don't until you wash it, but you can test safely.

  1. Measure the length (shoulder to hem) and width (pit to pit) before washing. Snap a photo of the tape measure.
  2. Wash cold on a gentle cycle.
  3. Air dry flat or on a hanger.
  4. Measure again. If it barely changed, it's stable on that routine.
  5. Only then try the dryer on low if you want, and measure once more.

That's how to know if a shirt will shrink in the dryer without wrecking it on day one.

Honestly, the annoying part isn't measuring, it's remembering which shirts changed and which never got worn after. WORN keeps a private photo diary, one tap a day, and after a month shows which shirts you still wear and which you've stopped reaching for. Start my outfit diary

How to wash so it doesn't shrink

How to wash clothes so they don't shrink, step by step:

  1. Cold water. Cold wash shrinking is much less likely than hot.
  2. Gentle or delicate cycle for cotton tees you love.
  3. Turn shirts inside out to protect prints and fibers.
  4. Don't overload the machine.
  5. Skip the dryer or use low heat, and pull items out while slightly damp.
  6. Reshape while damp, gently pulling to length and width.
  7. Dry flat for knits and wool.

Will shirts shrink in the wash on cold? Usually very little. Will shirt shrink in dryer on high? That's where most damage happens.

If it already shrank

How to unshrink a shirt (works best on cotton, not on felted wool):

  1. Fill a sink with lukewarm water and a good squirt of hair conditioner or baby shampoo.
  2. Soak the shirt for about 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Gently squeeze out water. Don't wring.
  4. Roll it in a towel to get more water out.
  5. Gently stretch it back to shape, a little at a time.
  6. Dry flat, stretching again as it dries.

This can get some size back, though results vary. If it's still too small, give it to a younger sibling, swap it, or turn it into a cropped tee.

Never lose a favorite to the wash again

FAQ

Will a 100% cotton shirt shrink in the wash?

It can, especially in hot water or the dryer. Preshrunk cotton shrinks less. Cold wash and air dry keep shrinking to a minimum.

Does washing in cold water prevent shrinking?

It helps a lot, but the dryer matters even more. Cold wash plus air dry is the safest combo for most shirts.

What does preshrunk mean on a shirt?

It means the fabric was treated before sale so most of the shrinking already happened. It can still shrink a small amount with heat.

How do I know if clothes will shrink before buying?

Check the label for fiber content and "preshrunk," then look at the care symbols. Wool, rayon and non-preshrunk cotton are the most likely to shrink.

Can you unshrink a shirt?

Sometimes. Soaking cotton in lukewarm water with conditioner, then gently stretching it while it dries, can recover some size. Felted wool usually can't be fixed.
