Smartest Pokemon, Ranked (and the Smartest Trainers)
The smartest Pokemon is Alakazam, whose Pokedex entry says its IQ is around 5,000 and its brain can outperform a supercomputer. Metagross (four linked brains), Uxie (the "Being of Knowledge"), Mewtwo and Slowking round out the top five. For trainers, Professor Oak, Bill and Clemont are the usual picks for smartest Pokemon character.
If you've ever lost a "my IQ is higher than yours" argument in the group chat, IQ Tester gives you something better than vibes, with a breakdown of which reasoning skills you're weakest at: Find my weak spots.
The smartest Pokemon, ranked
We ranked by what the games' own Pokedex entries and the anime say, not by battle stats. Special Attack is not a brain score, no matter what your competitive friend says.
- Alakazam – the only Pokemon with an IQ number in the Pokedex (around 5,000). Its brain keeps growing its whole life, per the dex.
- Metagross – formed when two Metang fuse. Four brains linked by a neural network, described as smarter than a supercomputer.
- Uxie – literally called the Being of Knowledge. Legend says it gave humans the intelligence to solve problems.
- Mewtwo – genetically engineered, telepathic, and in the first movie it questions its own purpose. Philosophy major energy.
- Slowking – the Shellder bite supposedly made Slowpoke a genius. Wild glow-up.
- Beheeyem – psychic powers that can rewrite memories. A bit sus, honestly.
- Porygon-Z – a digital Pokemon built from code; buggy, but technically a program.
- Rotom – lives inside appliances and becomes a Pokedex that talks back.
- Hoopa – a trickster with portal powers. Clever more than smart.
- Kadabra – Alakazam in training. Already bends spoons.
Smartest legendary Pokemon
Among legendaries, Uxie wins the knowledge vibe, Mewtwo wins raw mind power and Arceus is basically the creator, which feels like cheating, so we left it off. Same rule as gods in the Marvel list.
Alakazam's 5,000 IQ claim
The Alakazam IQ line shows up in several Pokedex entries across the games: its IQ is said to be around 5,000, and it remembers everything that's happened to it. Other entries say its brain cells keep multiplying, which is why its head is so heavy that it uses psychic power to hold it up.
So is it the smartest Pokemon ever? Per the official lore, yes. Per actual math, it gets weird. Keep reading.
Psychic types and "smart" Pokedex entries
Most of the smartest Pokemon list is Psychic type, and that's on purpose: Game Freak uses "psychic" as shorthand for "big brain."
| Pokemon | Type | What the Pokedex implies |
|---|---|---|
| Alakazam | Psychic | IQ around 5,000, perfect memory |
| Metagross | Steel/Psychic | Four brains, supercomputer-level |
| Uxie | Psychic | Being of Knowledge |
| Slowking | Water/Psychic | Became a genius after evolving |
| Beheeyem | Psychic | Can manipulate memories |
| Porygon-Z | Normal | A program that was "upgraded" |
But not all smart Pokemon are psychic. In the anime, Pikachu figures things out, Meowth learned human speech on his own (that's a whole episode), and Rotom literally runs the Pokedex app. Different kinds of smart.
Smartest Pokemon trainers and professors
Now the human side, aka the smartest Pokemon trainer and smartest Pokemon professor debate.
Professors
- Professor Oak – the OG Pokedex creator. Also forgets his grandson's name, which is a whole meme.
- Professor Sycamore – Mega Evolution research.
- Professor Kukui – studies moves by getting hit by them. Brave, questionable.
- Professors Sada and Turo – time-travel tech in Scarlet and Violet, so they're top tier on paper.
Trainers and inventors
- Bill – invented the PC storage system and accidentally turned himself into a Pokemon. Genius with zero risk assessment.
- Clemont – Lumiose City gym leader and inventor. "The future is now, thanks to science!"
- Cilan – connoisseur, reads battles like a sommelier reads wine.
- Cynthia – Champion, archaeology researcher and probably the smartest battler in the series.
- Ash – not academically smart, but he improvises. Street smart over book smart.
Is 5,000 IQ possible?
Short answer: no, not on a human scale.
Here's why. Modern IQ scores are standardized so the average is 100 and one standard deviation is 15 points. Each step of 15 points away from 100 gets rarer, fast:
- 115 – higher than about 84% of people
- 130 – higher than about 98%
- 145 – higher than about 99.9%
- 160 – roughly 1 in 30,000
At 5,000, you'd be over 300 standard deviations above average. There aren't enough humans (or atoms, honestly) for a test to measure that. A 5,000 IQ is a cool way of saying "absurdly smart," not a number any test could produce.
And here's the catch with all of these "IQ" numbers: nobody actually tested anyone. Judging intelligence by vibes is exactly how you end up wrong about yourself too. IQ Tester does the measuring for you with 20 untimed questions, harder ones counting for more, and puts the result on that same mean-100 scale. Find my weak spots
Real IQ scales explained
When people search "highest IQ Pokemon," they're really asking how intelligence is measured at all. A quick guide:
- Tests sample reasoning. Things like spotting the next number in a series, finishing an analogy, following logic, or completing a pattern.
- Raw scores become scaled scores. Your answers are compared to a reference so the average lands at 100.
- Harder questions should count for more. Getting a tricky item right says more than nailing an easy one.
- Ranges matter more than single numbers. Even real tests have a margin of error.

Check your own stats, trainer
You can't check Alakazam's score, but you can check yours. IQ Tester runs 20 untimed questions across number series, verbal analogy, logic and pattern, and shows your band plus three of your four category strengths free after a Google or Apple sign-in. It's for fun, not a clinical test, and it's a way better flex than a Pokedex entry.
