IQ of an African Grey Parrot: As Smart as a Toddler?

5 min read · IQ Tester

There's no real IQ of an African grey parrot, since IQ is a human test scale. But African greys are among the smartest birds known: the most famous one, Alex, learned labels for over 100 objects, colors and shapes, could count small numbers and answered "what's different?" questions. His trainer, researcher Irene Pepperberg, often compared his abilities on some tasks to those of a roughly 5-year-old child.

If you've ever said something smart without being sure you understood it (we've all done it in a seminar), IQ Tester shows what you really get versus what you're echoing: Find my weak spots.

What is the IQ of an African grey?

Every number you see for the average iq of an african grey parrot is a guess. Here's why "iq of a grey parrot" can't have a real answer:

What exists instead is decades of careful research on what greys can do. And honestly, that's more interesting than a number.

Are African greys the smartest parrot?

They're usually the first pick. Their combination of speech, labeling and problem solving is rare. But "smartest" depends on the task: some cockatoos are better at mechanical puzzles, and keas (a New Zealand parrot) are famous for figuring things out. Greys win on the language side.

Alex the parrot: what he could do

Alex was an African grey who worked with Irene Pepperberg for about 30 years until he died in 2007. He wasn't just repeating sounds. In tests, he:

  1. Named objects – labels for more than 100 things (keys, cork, paper, wool).
  2. Identified colors and shapes – "What color?" "Blue." "What shape?" "Four-corner."
  3. Counted – small quantities, up to about six.
  4. Compared – asked "what's same?" or "what's different?" about two objects, he could answer "color" or "shape."
  5. Used something like "none" – when nothing was different, he'd say "none," which researchers found interesting because it hints at a zero-like concept.

That's not "polly want a cracker." That's a bird answering category questions, which is basically what verbal analogy and pattern questions ask you to do.

The shell game study

A later grey, Griffin, was part of a 2020 study (published in Scientific Reports) where he tracked objects hidden under moving cups. Harvard undergrads did the same task, and Griffin matched or outperformed them on many of the trials. Yes, a parrot vs Harvard students. The parrot held his own.

Parrot vs crow vs human child

How smart are grey parrots next to other famous brains?

Animal Standout skill Rough comparison you'll see online
African grey Labels, categories, counting Some tasks like a ~5-year-old
New Caledonian crow Tool making, water puzzles Some tasks like a 5–7-year-old
Cockatoo Mechanical puzzles, lock opening Clever problem solver
Human 5-year-old Language, pretend play, "why?" The actual 5-year-old

The "as smart as a toddler" or "as smart as a 5-year-old" line is a comparison on specific tasks. A kid also tells stories, lies about who ate the cookies and asks 400 questions. A parrot doesn't do all that. So use the comparison as a vibe, not a score.

Other smart parrots (quakers, cockatoos)

The iq of a parrot question isn't only about greys:

The smartest talking bird crown still goes to the grey, though.

Can parrots understand words?

This is the real question behind "iq of talking parrot." Mostly, parrots mimic. But greys trained like Alex showed more than mimicry:

That suggests real understanding of some labels, not just copy-paste. Still, critics point out that training can accidentally cue answers (the same trap as the horse in our IQ of a horse post). Good studies try to block that.

Same goes for you, honestly. Saying the right word in class isn't the same as understanding it, and you can't always tell the difference from the inside. IQ Tester checks with 20 untimed questions, including verbal analogies where you have to see the relationship, not just recognize the word. Then you get a breakdown of your strengths. Why animal IQ comparisons are rough

Comparing iq of parrots compared to humans is fun, but:

  1. Different bodies. No hands, so many puzzles are unfair.
  2. Different goals. Parrots evolved to track flocks and food, not do worksheets.
  3. Tiny sample sizes. A handful of trained stars isn't "the average parrot."
  4. Training matters. Alex had decades of daily practice.

That last point is the useful one: the bird with the most practice looked the smartest. Practice beats raw talent more often than people think. If you liked this, compare it with the IQ of a goldfish, the animal whose reputation is the exact opposite.

FAQ

What is the average IQ of an African grey parrot?

There isn't one, because IQ is a human scale. Researchers instead describe specific skills, like Alex's labels for 100+ objects and his counting.

Are African greys as smart as a 5-year-old?

On some tasks, like labeling colors, shapes and small numbers, Alex's trainer compared his abilities to those of a young child, often quoted as around 5. But overall, a 5-year-old's language and imagination go much further.

How smart are African greys compared to other parrots?

They're usually ranked as the smartest talking parrot. Cockatoos and keas are excellent at mechanical puzzles, so the "smartest parrot" depends on the task.

Can parrots understand what they say?

Mostly they mimic, but trained greys like Alex used words to ask for things and labeled new objects correctly, which suggests some real understanding of certain words.

What is the IQ of a parrot compared to humans?

There's no real comparison score. A fun way to test your own pattern and verbal skills is IQ Tester, which gives a non-clinical breakdown across four reasoning categories.
