Halloween Logic Puzzles With Answers (Teens and Adults)

7 min read · IQ Tester

These Halloween logic puzzles with answers are free, grid-style mysteries built for teens and adults, not little kids: an easy costume party, a medium trick-or-treat route and a hard haunted house case. Each one has clues, a grid you can sketch in 30 seconds, and a full answer key at the end explaining every step.

If you love these but tend to get stuck at the same point every time (holding too many clues in your head, or the "if this, then that" step), IQ Tester shows exactly which kind of reasoning is slowing you down: Find my weak spots.

How to solve a Halloween logic puzzle

Logic grid puzzles give you a few categories (people, costumes, houses) and clues. Every item matches exactly one item in each other category. Your job is to figure out who goes with what.

The method:

  1. Draw a grid. People down the side, the other categories across the top.
  2. Mark the X's. Every "not" clue is an X. "Ben isn't the witch" = X in Ben/witch.
  3. Mark the checks. A direct match is a check. Once a row has a check, X the rest of that row and column.
  4. Hunt for the last box. If a row has only one empty square left, it's a check.
  5. Chain clues. "The attic person found the candle" links two categories. Use it every time one side gets solved.
  6. Never guess. If you're stuck, reread every clue. One of them has something you haven't used yet.

Printable tip: these are free to print. Copy the puzzle text into a doc, add a grid, and you've got a Halloween logic puzzles printable for a party, a homeroom (US) or form time (UK) warm-up, or a family game night.

Easy: the costume party grid

Three friends, three costumes. Ava, Ben and Cleo went to a Halloween party as a vampire, a witch and a ghost. Who wore what?

Clues:

  1. Ava's costume did not come with a pointy hat. (She isn't the witch.)
  2. Cleo didn't wear a sheet, and she didn't wear fangs.
  3. Ben wasn't the ghost.

Grid:

Vampire Witch Ghost
Ava
Ben
Cleo

Warm-up difficulty. You should solve it in under two minutes.

Medium: the trick-or-treat route

Four houses, four treats, one order. Jaden's group trick-or-treated at four houses on Maple Street, one after another. Each house gave a different treat. Find the order of houses (1st to 4th) and what each gave out.

Clues:

  1. The Patels were the last house they visited.
  2. The O'Briens were visited right before the Patels.
  3. The Garcias were not the first house.
  4. The chocolate bars came from the house visited right after the Kims.
  5. The Patels gave out lollipops.
  6. The popcorn balls didn't come from the first house.

Grid tip: use two grids, one for house vs. order and one for house vs. treat.

This is where it starts feeling like the puzzles that look easy but are actually hard, because clue 4 depends on something you haven't solved yet.

Hard: the haunted house mystery

Four friends, four rooms, four creepy objects. On Halloween night, Jade, Leo, Mia and Sam split up to explore an old haunted house. Each searched a different room and found one creepy object. Work out who searched which room and what they found.

Clues:

  1. The person in the attic found the candle.
  2. The mask turned up in the basement.
  3. The key was found in the library.
  4. Jade wasn't in the kitchen, and she didn't find the candle.
  5. Mia is scared of heights, so she never went up to the attic.
  6. Sam found the old photo.
  7. Mia and whoever found the key are cousins.

Grid tip: clues 1 to 3 link rooms and objects directly. Solve that link first, then you basically have one big category instead of two.

Doing these alone, you'll notice something: you're either great at holding clues in your head, or you need to write every single one down. Most people can't tell which, or where in the chain they lose the thread.

IQ Tester shows you that without the guesswork. It gives 20 untimed questions across logic, pattern, number series and verbal analogy, starting easy and getting harder, then shows how you did in each one. The guides add one short drill a day for the weakest area. Find my weak spots

Answer key

Here's the full Halloween logic puzzle answer key, with the reasoning, so you can check your steps and not just your final grid.

Easy answer: the costume party

Friend Costume
Ava Ghost
Ben Vampire
Cleo Witch

Why: Clue 2 says Cleo isn't the ghost (sheet) or the vampire (fangs), so Cleo is the witch. Clue 3 says Ben isn't the ghost, and the witch is taken, so Ben is the vampire. That leaves Ava as the ghost, which fits clue 1.

Medium answer: the trick-or-treat route

Order House Treat
1st The Kims Gummies
2nd The Garcias Chocolate bars
3rd The O'Briens Popcorn balls
4th The Patels Lollipops

Why:

  1. Clue 1 puts the Patels 4th. Clue 2 puts the O'Briens 3rd.
  2. The Kims and Garcias share 1st and 2nd. Clue 3 says the Garcias weren't 1st, so the Kims were 1st and the Garcias 2nd.
  3. Clue 4: chocolate came right after the Kims, so the Garcias gave chocolate.
  4. Clue 5: the Patels gave lollipops.
  5. Gummies and popcorn are left for the Kims (1st) and O'Briens (3rd). Clue 6 says popcorn wasn't 1st, so the O'Briens gave popcorn and the Kims gave gummies.

Hard answer: the haunted house

Friend Room Object
Jade Library Key
Leo Attic Candle
Mia Basement Mask
Sam Kitchen Old photo

Why:

  1. Clues 1 to 3 pair rooms and objects: attic = candle, basement = mask, library = key. So the kitchen = old photo.
  2. Clue 6: Sam found the old photo, so Sam was in the kitchen.
  3. Who was in the attic (candle)? Not Jade (clue 4), not Mia (clue 5), not Sam (kitchen). So Leo was in the attic with the candle.
  4. Jade and Mia are left with the library (key) and basement (mask).
  5. Clue 7: Mia is cousins with whoever found the key, so she didn't find it. Mia was in the basement with the mask.
  6. Jade was in the library with the key. That fits clue 4 too.

Make your own Halloween logic puzzle

Want to make a Halloween escape room puzzle or a party game? Here's the recipe, and it's a seriously good brain workout.

  1. Pick categories. Start with 3 people and 2 categories (costume, candy). Go to 4 and 3 once you're comfortable.
  2. Write the answer first. Decide who wore what before writing any clues.
  3. Write clues that remove options. Mostly "not" clues, a couple of direct links, and one "right before/after" clue for ordering puzzles.
  4. Test it on someone. If they solve it without one of your clues, drop that clue. If they can't solve it at all, there's more than one possible answer, so add a clue.
  5. Add spooky flavor. "Mia is scared of heights" is more fun than "Mia wasn't in the attic." Same logic.

For a Halloween math logic puzzle twist, use numbers as a category: candy counts like 3, 5, 8 and 12, with clues like "the vampire got exactly 4 more than the witch."

FAQ

Are these Halloween logic puzzles free and printable?

Yes. All three puzzles and the answer key here are free. Copy the text into a document, draw a grid under each puzzle, and print it for a party, class or game night.

What are good Halloween logic puzzles for adults?

Grid puzzles with four people and three categories, like the haunted house mystery above, are a good level for adults. They need you to chain clues together instead of solving each one alone. Add a fifth person to make it brutal.

How do you solve a logic grid puzzle?

Draw a grid, mark an X for every "not" clue and a check for every direct match. When a row has only one empty box left, that's the answer. Keep cycling through the clues until every box is filled.

What age are these Halloween logic puzzles for?

The easy costume grid works from about age 10, while the medium and hard puzzles are aimed at teens and adults. They're great for high school classes, sixth form, uni societies or a family Halloween night.

Are logic puzzles good practice for IQ tests?

They practice the same skill as the logic questions on IQ-style tests: following rules step by step. If you want to see how your logic compares to your pattern, number and verbal reasoning, IQ Tester shows your category strengths. It's for fun, not a clinical test.
