Average IQ of a Police Officer (and Detectives)
There's no official average IQ of a police officer, because most police forces don't give recruits an IQ test. They use entrance exams that check reading, writing, reasoning and judgment. The figure you'll often see (around 100 to 105) traces back mostly to one famous US court case about a test called the Wonderlic, and even that was about one department's hiring range, not a national measurement.
If you're thinking about a policing career and want to know where your reasoning is strong and where it slips before an entrance exam, IQ Tester shows you: Find my weak spots.
Average IQ of a police officer: the estimate
The search results for this are mostly small IQ blogs, Police1, Quora and Reddit. Put together, the story goes something like:
- "Cops average about 100."
- "Departments don't hire people who are too smart."
- "Detectives are smarter than patrol officers."
Only one of those has any public record behind it, and it's the weirdest one. So let's start there.
The "too smart to be a cop" story explained
This is the case everyone half-remembers from a TikTok.
What happened
- In the late 1990s, a man named Robert Jordan applied to the police department in New London, Connecticut.
- Applicants took the Wonderlic, a short cognitive ability test used by many employers.
- Jordan scored 33. News reports at the time said that was roughly equivalent to an IQ of about 125.
- The department only interviewed candidates in a middle band of scores, and Jordan's was above it. Their reasoning: people who score much higher than the job needs might get bored and quit, wasting the cost of training them.
- Jordan sued, arguing this was discrimination. A federal judge ruled against him, and a federal appeals court upheld that decision in 2000. The court said the policy might be unwise but wasn't illegal, because it applied to everyone equally.
What it does and doesn't mean
- It doesn't mean there's a national "IQ cap" for cops. It was one city's policy.
- It doesn't mean police are low IQ. Reports at the time noted that the Wonderlic's typical range for police officers was around the middle of the scale, which is roughly average, the same as plenty of jobs.
- It does mean that some employers worry about "overqualified" hires. That happens in lots of fields, not just policing.
So when someone in the comments says "you can be too smart to be a cop," the honest reply is: one department, one lawsuit, decades ago.
Detectives and FBI agents
Average IQ of a police detective
There's no published average IQ of a police detective either. In most US, UK and Canadian forces, you become a detective by:
- Working as a uniformed officer first, usually for a few years.
- Passing an internal exam or assessment (in the UK, for example, the National Investigators' Exam is part of the detective route).
- Getting selected and trained for investigative work.
Detective work leans heavily on reasoning skills: spotting patterns across cases, logic chains ("if he was here at 9, he couldn't have been there at 9:15"), and writing clear reports. So it's fair to say detectives need to be strong reasoners. A specific number? Nobody has it.
Average IQ of an FBI agent
The FBI's special agent selection includes a written test with sections on logical reasoning and figure-based reasoning, plus judgment and personality components, then interviews, fitness tests and background checks. Again: aptitude testing that overlaps with IQ-style skills, but no published IQ average.
US vs UK police entry tests
Here's how the main English-speaking systems test recruits. Details change, so always check your local force's website.
| Where | Typical entrance testing | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| US (varies by state/department) | Written exams like California's PELLETB, plus physical tests, interviews, background checks | Reading, writing, reasoning |
| England and Wales | Online assessment set to College of Policing standards, plus fitness, medical and vetting | Written and situational exercises, judgment, communication |
| Scotland | Police Scotland Standard Entrance Test, plus fitness and interview | Language, numbers, information handling |
| Canada (varies by force/province) | Aptitude exams such as Ontario's PATI, or the RCMP's entrance exam | Reasoning, comprehension, judgment |
Notice the theme: reading, logic, numbers and judgment. That's why people link police work to IQ, and it's also why the average IQ of UK police and the average IQ of American police officers can't be compared: the tests are different and the results aren't published as IQ scores.
What police aptitude tests ask
If you're 16 to 18 and considering this, here's what the questions often look like:
- Deductive reasoning. "All officers on night shift attended training. Sam did not attend training. Was Sam on night shift?" (No.)
- Inductive reasoning / patterns. Spot the rule in a sequence of numbers, letters or shapes.
- Information ordering. Put the steps of a procedure in the right order.
- Reading comprehension. Read a short incident summary and pick the correct statement.
- Number work. Basic maths: percentages, time, distance.
- Situational judgment. "A member of the public is shouting at you. What's the best first response?"
Here's the honest problem: when you practice these alone, it's hard to know whether you're actually weak at logic or just rushing, or whether "I'm bad at maths" is true or just a story you've told yourself since Year 8 (or 7th grade).
IQ Tester sorts that out for you. Its 20 untimed questions cover logic, pattern, number series and verbal analogy, and your free result shows your band plus three of your four category strengths, so you know which kind of entrance-exam question to practice first. Find my weak spots
Skills that matter more than IQ
The average intelligence of police officers is one small part of what makes a good officer. Things that matter as much or more:
- Communication. Calming someone down, explaining things clearly, writing reports that hold up in court.
- Judgment under pressure. Making a sensible call in seconds.
- Integrity. Background checks and vetting exist for a reason.
- Empathy. Most police contact is with people having one of the worst days of their lives.
- Physical fitness. Every force has a fitness standard.
- Patience and attention to detail. A lot of the job is paperwork. Like, a lot.
So the average IQ of a police officer isn't the number to chase. Reasoning helps you pass the exams; everything else makes you good at the job.

FAQ
What is the average IQ of a police officer?
No official average exists, because police forces use entrance exams rather than IQ tests. Estimates around 100 to 105 come mostly from coverage of the Wonderlic test in a famous US court case. Treat any exact number as a rough guess.
Is there an IQ limit for police officers?
There's no national IQ limit in the US, UK or Canada. The "too smart to be a cop" story comes from one Connecticut department that only interviewed applicants within a score band, and courts said that policy was legal. Most forces don't cap scores.
What is the average IQ of a police detective?
There's no published figure. Detectives usually start as uniformed officers and pass extra exams or assessments, and the work leans heavily on logic, pattern spotting and clear writing. That suggests strong reasoning matters, but not a specific number.
What is on a police entrance exam?
Most police entrance exams test reading comprehension, writing, deductive and inductive reasoning, basic maths and situational judgment. The exact test depends on your country, state or force, so check the official recruitment site.
How can I practice for a police aptitude test?
Start by finding your weakest reasoning area, then practice that type of question a little every day. IQ Tester shows category strengths across logic, pattern, number series and verbal, and it's for entertainment, not an official police test.
