Average IQ of a Physicist: Theory, PhDs and Majors

6 min read · IQ Tester

The average IQ of a physicist is usually estimated somewhere around 125 to 135, which would put physicists among the highest-scoring groups of any field. But be careful with that number: it's mostly inferred from graduate admissions scores and small historical studies, not from testing thousands of physicists. Physics majors, PhDs and theoretical physicists also differ from each other.

Wondering whether your brain is wired for this kind of thinking? IQ Tester splits your result into number series, verbal analogy, logic and pattern, so you can Find my weak spots before you pick that physics module.

Average IQ of a physicist

Here's where the estimates come from, and how much weight each deserves:

  1. Admissions test conversions. People have taken average GRE scores by intended graduate major and converted them to IQ estimates. Physics and math students usually land at or near the top. It's a decent signal, but conversions add lots of guesswork.
  2. Historical studies of top scientists. In the early 1950s, psychologist Anne Roe studied a small group of eminent American scientists, including physicists, and found they scored very high on the tests she gave, with theoretical physicists especially strong. It was a tiny, elite sample.
  3. General occupation data. Big studies show professional jobs average above 100, with wide ranges inside every job.

Honest bottom line: physicists as a group probably score well above average, but "the physicist IQ average is exactly 130" is false precision.

Physics majors vs physics PhDs

Average IQ of a physics major

Physics majors are self-selected. Most chose it because they liked math and were good at it. Estimates for undergrads tend to sit a little lower than for PhDs, maybe in the high teens to mid-20s above 100, but again, that's an inference.

Average IQ of a PhD physicist

A physics PhD filters again. You need strong grades, research experience and the stamina to spend five-plus years on one hard problem. Estimates for PhD physicists usually run a few points higher than for majors.

Average IQ of a physics student in high school

High school physics (or A level physics in the UK, grade 12 physics in Canada) is taken by a huge range of students. There's no meaningful "average IQ of a physics student" at this level because it's not filtered the same way.

Group Common estimate How solid?
High school / A level physics students Varies widely Not meaningful
Physics undergrads Roughly 115-130 Weak, inferred
Physics PhDs Roughly 125-135 Weak to moderate
Physics professors Similar to PhDs Weak
Eminent theorists (Roe's study) Very high Tiny sample

Theoretical vs experimental physicists

Average IQ of a theoretical physicist

Theorists work with math, models and abstract ideas, which overlaps heavily with what IQ tests measure: patterns, logic and manipulating symbols in your head. That's one reason people assume theorists are the highest scorers, and Roe's small study pointed that way too.

Experimental, quantum and nuclear physicists

Highest IQ physicist?

You'll see lists claiming exact IQs for Einstein, Hawking or Newton. None of them took a modern IQ test as adults, so those numbers are guesses. The fun counter-example: Richard Feynman is often said to have scored around 125 on a school test. He still won a Nobel Prize. Whether or not the story is perfectly accurate, the point holds: IQ isn't the whole story. (Fiction has its own version of this debate; see Hermione Granger's IQ.)

Why physics sits at the top of major rankings

When people rank average IQ by major, physics keeps showing up near the top. A few reasons:

Are physicists smarter than engineers?

On average estimates, physics and engineering sit close together. Physics leans abstract; engineering leans applied. Neither is "smarter," they reward different flavors of the same reasoning. Architecture is another close cousin, with spatial reasoning doing the heavy lifting; see average IQ of an architect.

The skills physics actually trains

Do you need a high IQ for physics? Helpful, sure. But physics also builds skills:

  1. Breaking big problems into steps. Draw it, label it, list what you know.
  2. Estimating. "Is this answer roughly sane?" is a superpower.
  3. Spotting patterns in data and equations.
  4. Staying stuck without quitting. Physics problem sets are designed to make you sit with confusion.
  5. Explaining clearly. If you can't explain it to a friend, you don't fully get it yet.

The skill most physics students wish they'd trained earlier: noticing which type of reasoning breaks first under pressure. Is it the algebra? Holding several steps at once? Seeing the pattern?

Figuring that out from your own revision (UK) or study sessions (US) is mostly guesswork. You remember the questions you got wrong, not why. IQ Tester shows which of its four reasoning categories is your weakest, and the guides turn that into one short drill a day. Find my weak spots

FAQ

What is the average IQ of a physics major?

There's no direct measurement, but estimates based on admissions test conversions usually put physics majors well above 100, roughly in the 115 to 130 range. Treat that as a rough inference, not a measured fact.

What IQ do you need for physics?

There's no official IQ cutoff for studying physics. Strong math skills, curiosity and persistence matter more day to day. Plenty of people with average-to-good scores do well in physics because they put in the reps.

What is the average IQ of a theoretical physicist?

Theoretical physicists are often assumed to be the highest scorers, and an old small study of eminent scientists supports that idea. But there's no modern, large dataset, so any exact number is a guess.

Who is the highest IQ physicist?

Nobody knows for sure. Famous physicists like Einstein and Hawking never published modern IQ scores, so online figures are estimates. Feynman reportedly scored only around 125 in school and still became a Nobel winner.

Is a physics IQ test a real thing?

Not really. "Physics IQ tests" online are usually physics trivia or puzzle quizzes. A general reasoning test that covers pattern and logic gives you a better sense of whether that style of thinking suits you.
