How to Glow Up Before Senior Year: Summer Plan
The best way to glow up before senior year is to start about 10 weeks out and stack small habits: a simple skin routine, a haircut plan timed for senior pictures, better sleep and posture, and practice photos so the camera stops scaring you. You won't become a different person by August, but you can walk in looking rested, put-together and confident. Below is the full week-by-week plan, plus notes for Year 13 (UK) and grade 12 (Canada).

Why senior year is the glow-up year
Senior year is basically a photo-shoot year. Senior pictures, homecoming, prom, college visits, the yearbook, the last first day. Everything gets photographed and posted.
That's why "freshman to senior year glow up" videos are a whole genre on TikTok. The good news: the glow-ups in those videos are mostly things you control. Better skin habits, a haircut that fits, clothes that fit, standing up straight, and knowing your angles.
UK and Canada: same energy, different name
- UK: Year 13 is your final year of sixth form or college. Leavers' photos, the leavers' ball (prom) and uni offers are your milestones.
- Canada: Grade 12 has grad photos, prom and "grad" itself.
The plan below works the same. Just swap "senior pictures" for grad photos or leavers' photos.
10 weeks out: start here
Ten weeks before school starts is usually early summer. Perfect timing.
Week 10: take your "day one" photo
Before you change anything, take a baseline selfie. Same spot by a window, arm's length, neutral face and a smile. You'll want this later.
Week 10–9: pick three habits, not thirty
The fastest way to quit a glow-up is trying to change everything. Pick three:
- A morning and night skin routine (below)
- A set bedtime, even in summer
- One daily movement thing: a walk, a run, a class, a sport
Week 8: plan around your senior pictures date
If you know your senior pictures date, write it down and count backward. Haircut timing, brow grooming and any skin changes all hang off that date.
Skin and hair plan
Simple skin routine for a senior year glow up
- Morning: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF 30+ every day. Summer sun is the big one.
- Night: cleanser, moisturizer. That's it.
- Rule: don't try a new product in the two weeks before photos. A reaction right before picture day is a nightmare.
If you have breakouts that won't settle, talk to a doctor or dermatologist early in the summer, not the week before.
Hair plan
- Weeks 10–6: experiment. Try the new cut, the new part, the color idea, the new braid style. If it flops, there's time to grow out of it.
- Weeks 5–3: lock in the style you'll wear for senior pictures.
- About 1–2 weeks before photos: final trim or touch-up, so it looks fresh but settled. Fresh-cut lines and fades often look best a few days in.
Grooming checklist
- Brows tidied (not over-plucked)
- Nails clean and short or done
- Facial hair: decide clean-shaven or groomed and stick to it for photos
- Lips moisturized
Prep for senior pictures
This is where most of the senior year glow up shows up forever.
How to look good for senior pictures
| Do | Skip |
|---|---|
| Wear clothes that fit well and you've worn before | Brand-new shoes that hurt |
| Pick solid colors or simple patterns | Big logos and busy prints |
| Bring a lip balm, comb and blotting papers | A brand-new skin product |
| Practice your smile at home | Holding your breath |
Practice photos (the secret weapon)
Two weeks out, do a mini shoot with a friend. Stand by a window or outside in shade. Try:
- Shoulders turned slightly, face toward camera
- Chin a little forward and down (it sharpens your jaw in photos)
- A real smile and a soft closed-lip smile
Look at the shots together and pick your best side. That's what you tell your photographer.
Judging your own practice photos is the hard bit. You'll either hate all of them or not know why one works. Glowmaxx scores each selfie on skin, hair, grooming, posture and angle, and light and fit, out of 10 with a short note, then gives you three moves aimed at your lowest score. Same photo, same score, so you can compare honestly. Start my glow-up
Mental glow up for senior year
The glow-up that really changes senior year isn't your skin. It's how you show up.
Small mindset moves
- Unfollow accounts that make you feel worse about yourself. It's your last year; protect your peace.
- Say yes to one new thing: a club, a team, a job, a friend group.
- Get your stuff together: a planner for college apps, UCAS (UK) or university applications (Canada).
- Sleep. Summer schedules wreck sleep. Rebuild your school-night bedtime two weeks early.
If you want something to write in, our glow up journal prompts work great for this, and pairing them with glow up affirmations keeps you consistent.
For juniors and sophomores
Asking how to glow up before junior year or sophomore year? Same plan, lower stakes. Use this year to find your routine and your haircut so senior year is just maintenance.
Week-before checklist
Here's how to glow up before school starts when the clock is basically out.
7 days out
- Final haircut or trim booked
- Outfit for day one tried on (and washed)
- Bedtime moved back to school-night time
- No new skin products
The night before school
How to glow up the night before school, realistically:
- Shower, cleanse, moisturize
- Lay out outfit and shoes
- Pack bag and charge phone
- Phone down 30 minutes before bed
- Alarm set early enough to not rush
Day one
Take your "today" photo in the same spot as your week-10 photo. Compare. That's your freshman to senior year glow up arc, or at least the summer chapter of it.
Walk into senior year knowing your score
You've got the plan; now find out which part to start with. In the next minute you can take one selfie and get a score out of 10 for each of the five areas you can change, a short note on each, and three moves for today. It doesn't score what you were born with, and your photo is thrown away after scoring.
FAQ
How can I glow up before senior year in one summer?
Start about 10 weeks out with three habits: a basic skin routine with SPF, a steady bedtime and daily movement. Time your haircut for senior pictures and practice photos two weeks before. Small daily changes add up more than one big makeover.
When should I get a haircut before senior pictures?
Experiment early in summer, then get a final trim about one to two weeks before your photo date. That gives it time to settle. Avoid trying a dramatic new style the week of.
How do I glow up for back to school fast?
Fix sleep, cleanse and moisturize, get a trim, and wear clothes that fit. Those show results within days. Our birthday glow-up plan is a good two-week version if you're short on time.
Is a senior year glow up the same as Year 13 or grade 12?
Basically yes. UK students have Year 13 and leavers' photos, and Canadian students have grade 12 and grad photos. The same 10-week plan works for all three.
