Fleece vs Hoodie: Which Is Warmer and Which Should You Own?
Fleece vs hoodie: a polar fleece (the fuzzy jacket-style kind) is usually warmer for its weight, dries faster and handles light damp better, while a cotton hoodie is softer, comfier for everyday wear and breathes more like a normal top. The confusing part is that a "fleece hoodie" is usually just a cotton-blend hoodie with a brushed, fleecy inside, not the same thing as a polar fleece.
If you've got a fleece and three hoodies and can't tell which one you really reach for when it's cold, WORN is being built to show you. Start my outfit diary
Fleece vs hoodie: which is warmer?
Polar fleece
Polar fleece is a synthetic fabric (polyester) with a thick, fuzzy pile on one or both sides. It traps a lot of air for how light it is, which is why it's warm.
- Warm for its weight
- Dries quickly
- Stays warmer than cotton when slightly damp
- Wind goes through it (it's not windproof)
Cotton hoodie
A standard hoodie is cotton or a cotton-polyester blend jersey.
- Soft, familiar, comfy
- Fine for cool days and indoors
- Gets cold and heavy when wet
- Thicker, heavier hoodies are warmer (see GSM below)
Is fleece warmer than cotton?
Generally yes, weight for weight. A mid-weight polar fleece will usually feel warmer than a mid-weight cotton hoodie, especially outside and especially if it's damp. But a thick, heavyweight hoodie can feel just as warm as a thin fleece indoors.
What "fleece" means on a hoodie label
This is the bit nobody explains. When a hoodie says "fleece," it usually means one of these:
- Fleece-lined / brushed fleece: the inside of the cotton-blend fabric has been brushed so it's fuzzy and soft. This is the classic cosy hoodie. Fleece hoodie meaning, nine times out of ten.
- Polar fleece hoodie: the whole thing is made of polar fleece, like a fleece jacket with a hood. Less common, more outdoorsy.
- Sherpa-lined: a thick, sheep-like pile lining. Very warm, quite bulky.
So "fleece vs non fleece hoodie" usually means "brushed inside vs loopback (French terry) inside."
Fleece-lined vs French terry vs cotton
What is French terry?
French terry is a knit fabric that's smooth on the outside with little loops on the inside. It's lighter and more breathable than brushed fleece. Fleece hoodie vs French terry, roughly:
| Fabric | Feels like | Warmth | Breathability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brushed fleece (fleece-lined) | Fuzzy, cosy inside | Warmer | Less breathable | Winter, cold walks, lounging |
| French terry (loopback) | Soft loops inside | Medium | More breathable | Spring, autumn, layering, gym |
| Plain cotton jersey | Like a thick tee | Lower | Very breathable | Mild weather |
| Polar fleece | Fluffy both sides | High for weight | Medium | Outdoors, hiking, camping |
Fleece hoodie vs cotton: which is a better material?
Is fleece a good material for a hoodie? For warmth, yes. For hot classrooms and summer evenings, French terry or lighter cotton is usually better. If you want a full guide to hoodie fabrics and thickness, our earlier posts on hoodie GSM go deeper, and Heavyweight T Shirt vs Regular explains GSM in plain English.
Breathability and sweat
Here's the trade-off:
- Polar fleece is polyester, so it doesn't absorb sweat. Sweat moves through and evaporates, which is good when you're active. But some people find polyester gets smelly faster.
- Brushed cotton hoodies absorb sweat and hold it, so you can end up clammy if you overheat on the walk to school.
- French terry breathes the best of the hoodie fabrics.
Fleece vs hoodie for hiking or sport
Fleece, every time. It's lighter, dries faster and layers under a waterproof. Cotton hoodies are the classic "don't wear this hiking" item because wet cotton stays cold.
Pilling, washing and how long each lasts
Does fleece pill?
Yes. Cheap polar fleece especially gets bobbly fast. Brushed fleece hoodies can also pill on the inside. To slow it down:
- Wash inside out
- Use a cool, gentle cycle
- Skip fabric softener on polar fleece (it can clog the fibers)
- Air dry or tumble on low
- Use a fabric shaver when pills appear
Hoodie care
- Inside out, 30 degrees
- Low heat drying or air dry to avoid shrinking
- Don't overwash, airing it out often works
Which lasts longer?
A good-quality heavyweight cotton hoodie can last years and often looks better as it fades. Polar fleece lasts too, but tends to look tired once it pills. Quality matters way more than the category here.
Layering a fleece over a hoodie
Yes, you can, and it's a very current look.
How to wear a fleece jacket over a hoodie
- Pick a zip or half-zip fleece one size up, or one cut a bit boxy.
- Wear a slim or regular hoodie underneath so it doesn't bunch.
- Pull the hood out over the fleece collar.
- Finish with baggy jeans or cargo trousers and chunky trainers.
Fleece vs jumper
A wool jumper is smarter and better at holding warmth in still, dry cold. A fleece is more casual, cheaper and better outdoors. For the full jumper picture, read Hoodie vs Jumper.
Which to buy for winter
Questions to ask first
- How much time do I spend outside? Lots = fleece (plus a coat). Mostly indoors = hoodie.
- Do I run hot? Go French terry or a zip fleece you can open.
- Do I already own a cosy hoodie? Then a fleece is the one that adds something new.
- What do I actually reach for on cold mornings?
That last question is the tricky one. Most people answer it from vibes. The fleece "feels" like your winter staple, but you might have worn it five times since November and your black hoodie fifty.
WORN is built to answer exactly that. One photo of your outfit a day, one tap, no wardrobe setup. After a month it reads back the pieces you really wear and the ones you never touch, so you'd know whether the fleece or the hoodie is your actual winter layer before buying another. A simple winter setup for students
- One brushed fleece-lined hoodie for cosy days
- One half-zip or full-zip polar fleece for outdoors and layering
- A proper waterproof or puffer over the top when it's really cold
See which layer you actually live in this winter
Stop guessing between the fleece and the hoodie. WORN is a waitlist right now and only gets built if enough people want it. The plan: one photo a day, private and deletable in one action, a month later a readback of your real favorites, and tomorrow's outfit suggested from your own clothes. One-time payment, nothing to renew.
FAQ
What is the difference between a fleece and a hoodie?
A fleece is usually a polyester jacket or pullover with a fuzzy pile, made for warmth and outdoors. A hoodie is a cotton or cotton-blend jersey top with a hood. A "fleece hoodie" usually means a cotton-blend hoodie with a brushed fleecy inside.
Is a fleece warmer than a hoodie?

Fleece hoodie vs French terry: which should I get?
Get fleece-lined for winter and lounging, French terry for spring, autumn, layering and if you run hot. French terry breathes more; brushed fleece is cosier.

Fleece vs hoodie reddit: what do people recommend?
The common advice is fleece for hiking, camping and outdoor cold, and a cotton hoodie for everyday comfort and lounging. Many people end up owning one of each for different jobs.
