Capsule Wardrobe Canva Template: Make Your Own in 20 Minutes

5 min read · WORN

To make a capsule wardrobe Canva template, photograph your clothes flat against a plain background, remove the backgrounds for free on your phone, then drop them into a Canva grid split into tops, bottoms, layers and shoes with a color palette strip on top. It takes about 20 minutes once your photos are ready, and it's free on Canva's free plan.

A board shows what you own, though, not what you actually wear. If you're not sure which pieces belong on it, WORN finds that out from one photo a day. Start my outfit diary

What a capsule wardrobe board in Canva looks like

Picture one page. Up top, a row of four or five color swatches. Below, neat rows of clothes with no backgrounds, grouped by type. At the bottom, a few outfit combos made from those same pieces.

That's it. It's the same layout people pay for in Etsy "capsule wardrobe template pdf" listings, just built by you.

Why make your own instead of buying

Getting clean photos of your clothes

Good photos make the whole board. Bad photos make it look like a lost-property box.

Flat lay checklist

Batch it: do all tops, then all bottoms. Twenty pieces takes around 15 minutes.

Which pieces to shoot

Not everything you own. A capsule closet template is about the pieces you'd actually reach for. If you're not sure what those are, be honest with yourself, because this is where most boards go wrong.

Removing backgrounds for free

Canva has a background remover, but it's a paid (Pro) feature. Free options work just as well:

  1. iPhone: open the photo, press and hold the item, then tap "Copy" or "Share" to lift it off the background (on recent iOS versions).
  2. Android: many phones, including recent Samsung and Pixel models, have a built-in cut-out or "extract" option in the gallery or photo editor. Check yours.
  3. Free web tools: several sites remove backgrounds at no cost, usually at lower resolution, which is fine for a board.

Save the cut-outs as PNGs so the transparent background stays transparent.

The grid: tops, bottoms, layers, shoes

Now open Canva.

Step-by-step

  1. Click Create a design. Choose A4 (UK/Canada printing), US Letter (US printing) or Instagram Story, 1080 x 1920 px (phone wallpaper).
  2. Search Elements for "Grids" and add a grid with enough cells, say 4 x 5.
  3. Add text labels above each row: Tops, Bottoms, Layers, Shoes.
  4. Drag each PNG into a cell. Resize so items look roughly the same scale.
  5. Set the page background to off-white or a soft tone from your palette.

Capsule wardrobe formula template

If you like structure, use a simple ratio for the grid. One common capsule wardrobe formula many people use:

Row Example count
Tops 6 to 8
Bottoms 3 to 5
Layers (hoodies, jackets, jumpers) 3 to 4
Shoes 2 to 3

Not a rule. A starting point. A student capsule for one term might lean on more layers in a cold Canadian winter or a rainy UK autumn, and more tees in a hot US September.

Before you finalize the grid, run each piece through this quick check:

Anything that fails two boxes goes to a "maybe" page instead of the main grid.

Again: not a rule, just a starting point. If you live in your hoodies, give them more cells (and read hoodie vs crewneck before buying another).

Adding color palette swatches

  1. Add five circles across the top.
  2. Click a circle, then the color picker, then the eyedropper.
  3. Click on your clothes to sample real colors: your main neutral, a second neutral, and one to three accents.
  4. Label them if you want ("base," "accent").

Now you can see at a glance if a new piece fits. That's half of what a capsule wardrobe checklist template does anyway.

Turning the board into outfit combos

Add a second page called Outfits. Duplicate pieces from page one and arrange them into 6 to 10 looks:

The honest problem with outfit boards

Boards are great at showing what could work. They're terrible at telling you what you actually wear. Half the outfits you make in Canva will never leave the screen, and you won't know which half.

That's the gap WORN fills: you take one photo of what you wear each day, one tap, no cutting out backgrounds. After a month it reads back the few pieces you really wear, the ones you never touch, and suggests tomorrow's outfit from your own clothes, so your board can be built on real favorites. Printing or saving it to your phone

Update the capsule wardrobe Canva template each season by swapping cells, not rebuilding.

Build your board around what you really wear

A Canva board looks great, but it's only as honest as the pieces you put on it. WORN is being built to show you your real favorites and the clothes you never touch after a month of one-tap outfit photos, kept private and deletable in one action. One-time payment, nothing to renew.

FAQ

Is there a free capsule wardrobe template in Canva?

Canva has free fashion and moodboard templates you can adapt, and you can build your own capsule wardrobe board in about 20 minutes with the steps above. You don't need Canva Pro unless you want its built-in background remover.

How do I make a capsule wardrobe in Canva?

Photograph your clothes flat, remove backgrounds for free on your phone, then drop the PNGs into a grid with rows for tops, bottoms, layers and shoes. Add a color palette strip and an outfits page.

Can I get a capsule wardrobe template PDF for free?

Yes. Build your board in Canva and download it as PDF Print. That gives you a printable capsule wardrobe template with your own clothes on it.

How many items should be on a capsule wardrobe board?

Many people aim for roughly 20 to 40 pieces per season, but there's no fixed rule. Start with what you actually wear and only add pieces that go with most of the rest.

A diary of what you actually wore. One photo a day, one tap. After a month it tells you the four things you really wear and the twelve you never touch.
