Smartest MBTI Types Ranked (and What the Data Really Says)
Looking for the smartest MBTI types ranked? Here's the honest version: the internet nearly always puts INTP, INTJ, ENTP and ENTJ at the top, but MBTI doesn't measure intelligence, so any "MBTI IQ ranking" is a stereotype, not data. Below we rank all 16 by the "smart" stereotype anyway (it's fun), then show what research does and doesn't say.
If you want to know what your brain is actually good at, a personality type can't tell you, but IQ Tester breaks your reasoning into four measured categories. Find my weak spots
Do MBTI types have different IQs?
Short answer: not in any way MBTI can tell you.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator sorts preferences, not abilities:
- E / I: where you get energy (people vs alone time).
- S / N: whether you focus on concrete details or patterns and ideas.
- T / F: whether you decide by logic or by values.
- J / P: whether you like plans or keeping options open.
None of those questions asks you to solve anything. "Do you prefer theories to facts?" tells you about taste, not reasoning ability. An INTJ who loves strategy and an ESFP who loves parties can have identical IQs.
What research does suggest
Psychologists mostly use the Big Five personality model rather than MBTI. Within the Big Five, Openness to Experience (curiosity, love of ideas) is the trait most consistently linked with intelligence scores, and the link is modest. MBTI's N (intuition) overlaps with Openness, which is probably why N types get labeled "smart." But a modest group-level link says almost nothing about any one person.
All 16 MBTI types ranked by "smart" stereotype
This is a ranking of reputation, built from how each type is described in personality communities, not a ranking of measured IQ. Don't get mad at the bottom of the list. It's vibes.
| Rank | Type | Nickname | Why the internet thinks it's "smart" |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | INTP | The Logician | Lives in theories, loves "well, technically" |
| 2 | INTJ | The Architect | Long-term plans, strategy, quiet confidence |
| 3 | ENTP | The Debater | Argues both sides for fun, fast ideas |
| 4 | ENTJ | The Commander | Strategic, decisive, runs the group project |
| 5 | INFJ | The Advocate | Deep, insightful, reads people well |
| 6 | INFP | The Mediator | Imaginative, writes, thinks in big meanings |
| 7 | ENFP | The Campaigner | Idea machine, connects everything |
| 8 | ENFJ | The Protagonist | Persuasive, emotionally sharp |
| 9 | ISTJ | The Logistician | Reliable, detailed, knows the rules |
| 10 | ISTP | The Virtuoso | Practical problem-solver, fixes stuff |
| 11 | ESTJ | The Executive | Organized, efficient, gets results |
| 12 | ISFJ | The Defender | Careful, remembers everything about everyone |
| 13 | ESTP | The Entrepreneur | Street smart, quick on their feet |
| 14 | ISFP | The Adventurer | Artistic, hands-on, intuitive feel |
| 15 | ESFJ | The Consul | Socially smart, holds the friend group together |
| 16 | ESFP | The Entertainer | Charisma, reads a room instantly |
Smartest to dumbest MBTI? Not really
Notice the bottom half isn't "dumb." It's types whose strengths (practical skill, social intelligence, timing, memory for people) don't fit the stereotype of a "genius" in a library. An ESTP who can talk their way out of anything and an ISTP who can rebuild an engine are clever in ways IQ tests don't fully capture.
Which MBTI has the highest IQ?
There's no reliable answer, because:
- MBTI doesn't test reasoning. It's a self-report questionnaire about preferences.
- The few studies comparing MBTI and IQ are small. They tend to find small differences that lean toward N types on some measures, which fits the Openness link above. Small, mixed results like that can't crown a winner.
- Self-selection is huge. People who love ideas are more likely to take personality tests online, discuss them, and identify as INTP or INTJ. That inflates the "smart NT" image.
- Online type results aren't stable. Plenty of people get a different type when they retake the test.
So "INTJ IQ" or "INTP IQ" posts claiming averages like 130+ are made up. There's no data backing them.
Smartest MBTI females
This one gets searched a lot. Same answer, different framing.
- The "smartest MBTI female" lists online usually put INTJ women and INTP women on top, often framed as rare.
- The "rare" part is a separate stereotype; type-frequency estimates vary depending on the source and test.
- Gender doesn't change what MBTI measures. An INTJ woman isn't smarter than an ESFJ woman because of her letters.
If you're a girl who gets told "you're so INTJ" every time you correct someone in class, cool, but your actual reasoning strengths are worth knowing separately from your type.
Why NT types top every list
There's a reason the same four letters keep winning:
- The descriptions are written that way. NT types are described with words like "logical," "strategic," "analytical." Of course they sound smart.
- NTs talk about intelligence more. Communities around INTP and INTJ often discuss IQ, so the topic sticks to them.
- Confusing interest with ability. Loving theory is not the same as being good at it. (See smart vs intelligent difference: an "intellectual" is defined by interest, not skill.)
- Main character energy. Fictional geniuses get typed as INTJ or INTP all the time, which feeds the loop.
None of this means NTs aren't smart. It means the letters aren't the evidence.
Wisdom isn't on the list either
Being good with people, making calm decisions and knowing what not to say are often assigned to F or S types, and they're closer to wisdom than to IQ. We explain that split in intelligent vs wise difference.
Find out your real reasoning strengths
Here's the problem with any MBTI tier list: you can't use it to improve. "You're an INFP, so you're #6" gives you nothing to work on. What you can work on is specific reasoning skills, if you know which ones are weak. And you can't figure that out by reading type descriptions or rating yourself.
IQ Tester measures it instead of guessing. Twenty untimed questions across number series, verbal analogy, logic and pattern, with harder questions counting for more. You see your band and three of your four category strengths free, which tells you more about your reasoning than your four letters ever will. Find my weak spots
Then compare with friends. IQ Tester lets you challenge a friend head-to-head and share a card, which is a much better group-chat argument than "INTJs are smarter."

FAQ
Which MBTI has the highest IQ?
There's no reliable data showing any MBTI type has a higher IQ. MBTI measures preferences, not reasoning ability. Small studies hint that intuitive (N) types lean slightly higher on some measures, but the differences are small and say nothing about individuals.
What are the most intelligent MBTI types according to the internet?
INTP, INTJ, ENTP and ENTJ usually top online rankings, followed by INFJ. That's because their descriptions use words like "logical" and "strategic," not because they've been shown to score higher on IQ tests.
Is INTJ the smartest personality type?
INTJ has a "smart" reputation, but MBTI doesn't measure intelligence, so there's no evidence INTJs are smarter on average. Plenty of INTJs score average on reasoning tests, and plenty of other types score high.
Who is the smartest MBTI female?
Online lists usually say INTJ or INTP women. That's the same stereotype applied to women, often with a "rare" label. Your type doesn't determine your intelligence, whatever your gender.
Does MBTI measure intelligence?
No. MBTI asks about preferences like energy, focus, decisions and planning, and never asks you to solve a problem. To see your reasoning strengths, you need a reasoning test, such as an IQ-style test (for fun, not a clinical assessment).
