How Many Clothes Should I Bring to College or Uni?
How many clothes should I bring to college? Bring roughly two weeks' worth: about 14 tops, 4-6 bottoms, 14-16 pairs of underwear and socks, 2-3 layers, one coat for the season, 3-4 pairs of shoes and one or two going-out or formal outfits. Two weeks gives you a buffer if laundry slips, and it still fits in a small dorm or halls closet.

Real talk: almost everyone overpacks for freshman year (US) or first year at uni (UK and Canada). Then they go home at Thanksgiving or reading week and drag half of it back. Here's how to get it right the first time.
The short answer: about 2 weeks of clothes
Why two weeks? Because laundry is the bottleneck.
- You'll probably do laundry once a week, maybe once every 10 days once deadlines hit.
- Shared machines are sometimes busy or broken.
- Two weeks covers a "missed laundry week" without you buying emergency socks.
Bring more and it won't fit. Dorm closets in the US and halls wardrobes in the UK are usually small, and you might be sharing.
Count per item: the college clothes checklist
Here's the clothes packing list for college, per item. Treat these as maximums, not targets.
| Item | How many | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirts / everyday tops | 10-14 | Mix of basics and favorites |
| Long-sleeve tops / sweaters | 4-6 | More if you're somewhere cold |
| Hoodies / sweatshirts | 2-3 | You will live in these |
| Jeans | 2-3 pairs | Jeans can be worn several times between washes |
| Other bottoms (trousers, skirts, shorts) | 2-4 | |
| Leggings / joggers | 2-4 | Lounge, gym, 9am lectures |
| Underwear | 14-16 | Don't skimp |
| Socks | 14-16 pairs | |
| Pajamas / sleepwear | 2-3 sets | Think fire alarm at 3am |
| Gym clothes | 3-4 sets | |
| Going-out outfits | 2-3 | |
| Formal outfit | 1 | Interviews, formals, presentations |
| Coat / jacket | 1-2 | One for the weather, one light |
| Shoes | 3-4 pairs | Sneakers, a nicer pair, shower shoes, plus boots if needed |
How many shirts to bring to college?
10-14 is plenty. If you sweat a lot or play sports, aim for the top of that range.
How many pairs of jeans for college?
Two or three. Most people rotate the same pair anyway.
How many clothes should I bring to college as a guy?
Guys can usually go a bit lighter: 10-12 tees, 2-3 hoodies, 2 jeans, 2 joggers, 1-2 shorts, 1 smart shirt plus chinos, sneakers, a nicer pair of shoes and one coat. The college packing list for guys and girls is honestly the same skeleton, just with different pieces.
Adjust for laundry and storage
Use these quick rules to tweak the list:
- Free laundry in your building? Pack closer to 10 days of clothes.
- Paid laundry or a walk to get there? Stick with 2 weeks.
- Tiny closet or shared room? Use under-bed storage boxes for off-season clothes and bring half of what you planned for seasons that are months away.
- Going home often? Pack for now and swap clothes on visits.
The uni packing list for clothes in UK halls usually comes down to one wardrobe and a few drawers. If it doesn't fit there, it doesn't come.
Seasons and weather (US, UK, Canada)
Where you study changes how many clothes you need.
- US South or California: fewer heavy layers, more tees and shorts. One light jacket might be enough until winter break.
- US Northeast and Midwest: you'll need a real winter coat, boots, hat and gloves by late fall.
- UK: pack for damp and gray more than freezing. A waterproof jacket matters more than a giant puffer. Layers win.
- Canada: a proper winter coat, insulated boots, thermal layers, gloves and a toque (a beanie, for everyone outside Canada). Many people buy winter gear after arriving if they're moving from somewhere warm.
Moving in during late August or September? You don't need to bring your full winter wardrobe. Bring it home after the first break, or have it sent. Our guide to winter outfits for school covers how to layer when it really drops.
Going-out and formal clothes
This is where people panic-pack.
- Going-out outfits: 2-3 is enough. You'll rewear them, and nobody tracks it. Freshers' week (UK) and welcome week (US and Canada) usually have themed nights, so leave room to put together something from what you have.
- Formal: one outfit. A dress or a smart top and trousers, or a shirt, chinos and maybe a blazer. Useful for interviews, presentations and formals.
- Costumes: don't pack them. Build them on the spot with your new friends.
What everyone overpacks (what not to bring to college)
- Shoes "just in case." Four pairs is the max for most people.
- Clothes that don't fit right now.
- Five hoodies (you'll get free ones from clubs and societies).
- High-maintenance fabrics that need dry cleaning.
- Outfits for a version of you that goes to a lot of fancy events.
- Every single going-out top you own.
A good test: if you haven't worn it in the last three months, leave it at home.
Here's the problem: you can't remember what you actually wore last semester, so you pack "just in case." WORN is a diary of what you actually wear, one photo a day. A month in, you'll see your real favorites, and next time you pack only those. Start my outfit diary
Track what you actually wear at college
Once you're moved in, you'll quickly notice a few pieces carry your whole week. That's normal. It also means the answer to "how many clothes do I need?" gets smaller every semester.
Keep notes (or photos) for the first month. When you go home for the first break, take back anything you haven't touched. If you end up with a pile, our guide to Vinted vs Depop shows where to sell it.
Pack less, wear more
Start a one-photo-a-day outfit diary in WORN on your first day, and by your first trip home you'll know exactly which clothes earned their spot. That's the real answer to how many clothes you should bring to college: the ones you actually wear.
FAQ
How many clothes should I take to uni in the UK?
About two weeks of clothes, sized to fit one halls wardrobe and a few drawers. Prioritize layers and a waterproof jacket over heavy winter items. You can bring extra after the first visit home.
How many outfits should I bring to college?
You don't need a set number of full outfits. Bring around 14 tops and 4-6 bottoms that mix and match, plus 2-3 going-out looks and one formal outfit. That covers daily classes, nights out and interviews.
How many clothes should I pack for college as a guy?
Around 10-12 tees, 2-3 hoodies, 2 pairs of jeans, 2 joggers, gym kit, one smart outfit, 3-4 pairs of shoes and a coat. Add more underwear and socks than tops, since you'll go through those fastest.
Is two weeks of clothes too much for college?
For most students, two weeks is the sweet spot because it covers a missed laundry day. If you have free in-building laundry and a very small closet, 10 days of clothes is fine.
What clothes should I not bring to college?
Skip clothes that don't fit, pieces you haven't worn in months, dry-clean-only items, and extra shoes "just in case." Most people also overpack hoodies and going-out tops.
